Hey Walt,

I must say though that 4D v13 is amazing stable, robust, and fast over
the internet. I often have to make changes in a "live" 4D Server over
the Internet from my office. Of course, my client and myself have a
very fast FIOS connection, and it's like being in the office locally.
(Although we only have about 10-14 users, in various parts of the US,
connecting directly, remotely, at a max. And there's only a single
developer.)

Compared to some of my other other clients, in v12 over a VPN or RDP,
where it is sluggish, at best, to connect.

I am quite impressed with 4D's remote improvements.

same thing when connecting to one of our
development databases remotely: I use either VPN or RDC. That is much
faster
than connecting directly to 4D Server over the Internet.

John,

Yes, fast connections make a big difference - if they exist at both
ends. In
my home-office, I have Fiber Optic which tests at a download speed of
70
MBPS to 75 MBPS, and upload speeds of 50 MBPS to 60 MBPS. But none of
my
clients have speeds like that, so when I make remote backups for them,
the
speeds are no better than the clients'. ?In those cases, 4D Remote
performs
far better over VPN than over raw internet.

But Fiber still comes in mighty handy for downloading new versions of
4D,
Windows updates, and anything where I am connecting to a server that
is just
as fast as me.

I fully agree with you about v13. We have sites that run like the
Energizer
Bunny. But I have noticed that after 25-28 days, we need to restart the
server because we start getting strange index errors. We will try
rebuilding
indexes every 15 days, and see if we can keep the server running for
60 days
or more - only shutting down when Windows Updates require a restart.

On the Single-user side, I am now seeing that same kind of reliability
from
v14. Crashes were multiple times per day with the first Betas, and
every
other day with early release versions; but now, we're up to more than
50
daily releases, and the stability has definitely improved. I haven'
tested
v14 extensively in client-server yet, but will start some
cross-platform
client-server tests within the next week or so.

Cheers,
